artemis, the huntress

7.00

Artemis was revered as the protectress of young girls and women and was the most independent of the Olympian goddesses, roaming the forests in her role as huntress. She was said to be most comfortable in the companionship of women friends, and she valued her freedom and personal space——protecting them with ferociousness.

Here’s a story about Artemis that we like because it speaks to our simmering rage about street harassment & the male gaze et al:

The hunter Actaen spied on the goddess as she was bathing at a spring. Furious when she caught him,  Artemis transformed him into a stag and had him torn apart by his own hounds. (insert shrug emoji) Just saying.
